Glass Care
Advice from Glass + Metal Craft! It is extremely important that glass be kept clean. Dust, dirt and other substances that collect on glass can often times contain chemicals which will corrode the surface. This will eventually lead to pitting and staining of the piece.
The safest way to clean glass is always with mixture of mild dish soap and water. When finished, rinse completely with clear water and wipe dry with a soft cloth.
Non-streaking window cleaners (such as Windex®) are usually safe, but we recommend testing a small area first.
Do not use abrasive cleaners intended for sinks and tile surfaces, or metal scrapers of any kind. They can scratch the glass surface, and this can leave it structurally weakened.
Never use any of the following products on windows or other glass, particularly on insulated glass window units:
- Petroleum-based cleaners
- Caustic chemicals
- Razor blades, putty knifes or abrasive pads
- High-pressure water hoses
More advice from Glass + Metal Craft. When cleaning insulated glass units, be sure to dry all cleaning fluids or solutions from window gaskets, sealants and frames.
Because of its “rough” surface, sandblasted, etched and carved glass have special cleaning needs. This is usually because of blotching – most often from oil from hands. Clean the blasted side with a good quality, non-streaking window cleaner. Spray the glass lightly and wipe with a clean towel. Lint-free terrycloth towels work best.
Continue lightly drying the glass in circular motions until the moisture is gone. This prevents water lines, streaks or spots.
For stubborn stains, use a small amount of Goof Off® or similar product that cuts oil, like a paint or lacquer thinner – but be careful to not apply on any painted surfaces. Rub in a continuous circular motion to wet the area. Then follow by cleaning as stated above with a window cleaning product.
