The Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) Franklin Square Station — left abandoned beneath Philadelphia near the Old City district for nearly 50 year’s — has come back to life, featuring a gleaming Main Headhouse of glass and metal from G+MC.
We wrote, here, last year, when only the steel framework had been installed, that architect Sowinski Sullivan’s design would be stunningly transparent, a playful enclosure of canted glass walls supported by glass fins and stainless steel mounting and support hardware. Finished in April, it exceeds expectations!
Glazier National Metal & Glass selected Glass and Metal Craft to fabricate the 5,500 sq.ft. of insulated, laminated Guardian Glass, as well as engineer and supply the stainless. Each of the 150 x 60 inch glass panels that make up the exterior facade feature a bird-friendly pattern to mitigate collisions.
Finally, we shipped all components with stamped engineering drawings in a flow that facilitated installation.
The $30 million development will improve access to several Philly landmarks, including Independence Mall, the National Constitutional Center, and the African American Museum in Philadelphia.
G+MC is proud to be selected for this project, and we think it again underscores our growing national reputation for how we engineer, fabricate, and deliver our glass and metal to ensure success.
