Glass and Metal Craft recently received a 2020 Commercial Projects Award from Guardian Glass – recognizing outstanding glass installations across the nation – for side-by-side projects in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, beautifully redefining the City’s skyline.
In one corner of a downtown block sits the newly constructed Hyatt Place Hotel, a 12-story, 160-room hotel; in the other, the newly constructed 15-story Warner Building office center, which also contains a 430-space parking structure.
Glazier Glass Design of Grand Rapids selected G+MC to fabricate the IGs for the hotel, while Precision Wall out of South Bend chose us for the IGs on the office center. When combined, the projects totaled nearly 200,000 square feet of Guardian SunGuard glass, plus an elaborate point-supported IG structure wall at the entrance and a custom roof windscreen on the top floor terrace of the Warner Building.
While these were two separate projects, they were designed by the same architect, Ghafari Associates, and run simultaneously by the same general contractor, Orion Construction, on extremely tight delivery schedules.
In addition to the IGs, G+MC also provided a striking glass entrance to the Warner Building, consisting of a point-supported structural wall and entry system, and a glass and metal windscreen gracing a stone deck set atop the building.
It was an “all-hands” effort to plan, fabricate, and deliver both projects simultaneously, using state-of-the-art fabrication processes and equipment to ensure stunningly flat facades and state-of-the-art logistics to kit the deliverables and speed the flow of installation.
