A community gem of the quaint city of Holland, Michigan, the main venue of the Herrick District Library needed some upgrades. However, given its history and popularity, it came away with the financial resources to dramatically transform the facility.
The vision began with fixing a leaky roof and some structural issues. And then quickly evolved to new collaborative study and meeting rooms, as well as a new open technology environment. All with glass adding light, a sense of greater space, and an enhanced feeling of fellowship. Maxwell Nykerk, a team member at contractor Lakewood Construction located in Holland, served as architect for the $5.6 million renovation.
Premier Grand Rapids, Michigan, glazier Architectural Glass and Metals selected Glass + Metal Craft to engineer and fabricate the laminated glass that transformed the interior. This includes rows of floor-to-ceiling glass partitions, new glass study rooms, and the glass for a “floating” staircase. The stunning three-story showpiece integrates G+MC’s OBEX™ pre-engineered Glass Guardrails. It serves as an open-air shaft that floods the space with natural light.
In addition, G+MC provided the stainless stairway rails and connecting hardware, the cladding for the partitions and study rooms, and the handles and other hardware for the study room doors.
Our Mantra
Our mantra is to source the glass from here in the United States. We use our strategic partner Guardian Glass, just up the road from our headquarters. To ensure proper fit and timely delivery, we also custom design and manufacture our metal hardware, or prioritize sourcing it locally. We consider both to be best practices. Solid options, given today’s cost uncertainties, and the potential delays from unexpected do-overs through errors by foreign suppliers using overseas shipping.
The Herrick District Library is just one of several West Michigan projects that G+MC has completed in the past several months. And we’ll talk more about them here. We think it’s a testament to delivering great products, and the positive word of mouth that follows.
